What is Carrier identity theft in freight?

Carrier identity theft is a fraudster impersonating a legitimate carrier, using its real DOT number and authority details but their own contact information and payment instructions. The freight is then stolen or the payment diverted while the real carrier knows nothing about it. Because the credentials being presented are genuine, detection depends on verifying contact details against the source record rather than against the packet.

Also called: carrier fraud, load fraud.
