What is SAFER in freight?

SAFER is the FMCSA public system that returns a carrier's registration, authority status, fleet size, and safety summary from its DOT number. It is the first stop in vetting a carrier because it is authoritative and free. It reports what was filed, so a company that has stopped operating can still show an active record until a filing changes.
