What is TONU in freight?

TONU stands for truck ordered not used, and it is the fee a carrier bills when a load is cancelled after the truck has already been dispatched to it. The carrier has committed the asset, turned down other freight, and in most cases already driven toward the shipper, so the fee compensates for the wasted capacity rather than for the move itself. It is negotiated case by case and is normally lower than the line haul it replaces.

Also called: truck ordered not used, truck order not used.
