Freight glossary / Accessorials and charges

What is Tarp in freight?

A tarp is the heavy waterproof cover strapped over freight on an open trailer to protect it from weather and road debris. Tarping is physical work performed by the driver at the shipper, so it is billed as an accessorial and agreed before dispatch. Loads requiring a tarp draw from a smaller pool of carriers, because not every flatbed operator carries or will handle them.

Also called: tarping, tarp fee.
