Freight glossary / Pricing and rates

What is Rate per mile in freight?

Rate per mile is the line haul divided by the miles of the move, and it is the standard way carriers compare loads of different lengths. Short hauls carry a higher rate per mile than long hauls because the fixed work at each end is spread over fewer miles. A rate per mile quoted without saying whether it includes fuel or deadhead is not comparable to another one.

Also called: rpm, per mile rate.
