What is Fuel surcharge in freight?

A fuel surcharge is a separately stated charge that adjusts with diesel prices so the line haul does not have to be renegotiated every time fuel moves. Most surcharge schedules key off the weekly national diesel average the Department of Energy publishes and convert it into a per mile amount. Because the schedule is agreed in advance, a surcharge is predictable in a way the underlying fuel price is not.
