Freight glossary / Compliance and authority
What is Permit in freight?
A permit is state issued authorization to move a load that exceeds legal size or weight limits. Each state issues its own, so a multi state move needs several and they must agree on the route. Permit conditions frequently dictate travel times, which is why permitted freight rarely moves on a normal transit schedule.
