What is Escort vehicle in freight?

An escort vehicle travels ahead of or behind an oversize load to warn traffic and check clearances. The number required and where they must be positioned is set by the permit, not by the carrier. Escorts are billed separately and are a significant part of the cost of an oversize move.

Also called: pilot car.
