What is Overweight in freight?

An overweight load exceeds a legal gross or axle weight limit and requires a permit and often a specified route. Running overweight without one risks fines and being placed out of service at a scale. Overweight permitted freight is a distinct market from standard truckload because routing and timing are constrained.
