Freight glossary / Accessorials and charges

What is Per diem in freight?

Per diem in drayage is the daily charge an ocean carrier bills when its container stays out past the agreed free days after leaving the terminal. It accrues until the empty is returned, which makes return appointment availability a direct cost issue. It is distinct from demurrage, which is charged while the box is still inside the terminal.

Also called: container per diem.
