What is Free time in freight?

Free time is the period a party gets before a waiting charge starts running. At a dock it is the window before detention accrues, at a terminal it is the days before demurrage begins, and on a container it is the days before per diem starts. Every free time clock has a defined start event, and disputes almost always come down to disagreement about when that clock started.
