What is Demurrage in freight?

Demurrage is the charge a port or rail terminal bills when a container sits on its property beyond the free time allowed. It is charged by the day and is owed to the terminal, not to the trucker. Demurrage and per diem are frequently confused: demurrage is the container sitting inside the terminal, per diem is the container out in the world past its return date.
