What is Drayage in freight?

Drayage is the short-haul trucking move between a port or rail ramp and a nearby warehouse, yard, or distribution center. It is a distinct market from over the road freight because it runs on container equipment, is governed by terminal appointment systems, and is exposed to per diem and demurrage clocks that do not exist in dry van. Most drayage moves are measured in tens of miles rather than hundreds.
