What is Out of service in freight?
Out of service is an order barring a driver or vehicle from operating until a violation is corrected. It is issued at roadside inspection for defects serious enough to be an immediate hazard, and it strands the load where it sits. A carrier's out of service rate is one of the more meaningful safety signals because each one represents a failure found in the field.
