What is Notice of assignment in freight?

A notice of assignment is the letter a factoring company sends telling a broker or shipper that a carrier's invoices have been assigned to it and must be paid to the factor instead of to the carrier. Paying the carrier directly after receiving one does not discharge the debt, so the payer can be made to pay twice. It is the single document most often ignored in carrier settlement, and doing so is expensive.

Also called: noa.
