What is Cross dock in freight?

Cross docking is unloading freight from an inbound trailer and loading it straight onto an outbound one with little or no storage in between. It is how LTL terminal networks work and how retailers consolidate store deliveries. It reduces inventory holding at the cost of requiring both sides to arrive on schedule.

Also called: crossdock, cross-docking.
