What is Rail ramp in freight?

A rail ramp is the terminal where containers and trailers transfer between train and truck. Ramp location determines which lanes are viable intermodal, because the dray at each end has to be short enough not to erase the rail savings. Ramp congestion and appointment availability drive most intermodal service variability.

Also called: ramp, intermodal terminal.
