Freight glossary / Pricing and rates

What is Market rate in freight?

A market rate is an estimate of what a lane is currently paying, built from reported transactions across many shippers and carriers. It is a reference point for negotiation rather than a price anyone is obliged to accept. Market rate sources differ on whether they report spot or contract, and on whether the figure includes fuel, so comparing two without checking that is a common error.

Also called: benchmark rate.
