What is Chassis split in freight?

A chassis split is when the container and the chassis needed to carry it are at different locations, forcing an extra trip. It is billed as an accessorial because it adds a move that was not in the original plan. Splits are a symptom of chassis pool imbalance rather than of anything the carrier did.
