What is Carrier exit in freight?

Carrier exit is trucking companies ceasing operations and removing their capacity from the market. It is visible in public federal records before it is visible in rates, because operating authority lapses and insurance filings are cancelled on a schedule. Sustained exit tightens capacity with a lag, which is why it is tracked as a leading indicator rather than a current one.
