Freight glossary / Compliance and authority

What is BIPD insurance in freight?

BIPD is bodily injury and property damage liability insurance, the coverage a motor carrier must hold to operate under federal authority. Proof of it is filed with the FMCSA, and the filing being cancelled is what causes a carrier's authority to go inactive. Because the filing is public, an insurance cancellation is one of the earliest visible signs that a carrier is in trouble.

Also called: bodily injury and property damage, liability insurance.
