What is Drop trailer in freight?

A drop trailer arrangement is one where the carrier leaves a trailer at a facility to be loaded or unloaded and picks it up later, rather than waiting with it. It removes detention risk entirely and lets the tractor stay productive. It requires the carrier to have spare trailers sitting at the customer, which is a real cost that shows up in the rate.

Also called: drop and hook, preloaded trailer.
