USDOT number
A USDOT number is the identifier FMCSA assigns to a company that operates commercial motor vehicles, and it is the number the company's registration record hangs on.
Last updated 11 October 2026.
The USDOT number is how FMCSA, and everyone who checks a carrier, finds the company. It sits on the truck, on the registration, and on the record you open before you tender freight.
FMCSA's registration pages are where a company starts that record. The number is an identifier. By itself it does not say the truck is insured for your freight, or that authority is active today.
People mix it up with the MC number because both are short IDs on the same email signature. They answer different questions. The USDOT number identifies the company. The MC number identifies operating authority. A check that pulls one and ignores the other can look finished and still be pointed at the wrong filing.
On a live cover the number is the start, not the end. Open the record, confirm the legal name matches the carrier you are talking to, then look at authority and insurance. A driver who recites a number that belongs to someone else is a reason to stop.
FreightScout uses those identifiers inside Cover, before a rate is discussed: authority, insurance, the truck, and the identity on the record. A number the caller gives is checked against the record. A mismatch is not waved through. How FreightScout vets a carrier.
Questions people actually ask
Is a USDOT number proof the truck is insured for this freight?
No. It finds the company's registration record. You still check active authority, insurance that fits the load, and that the company on the phone is the company on the record.
Which number should a cover pull, the USDOT or the MC?
Pull the one the carrier gave you, then confirm you opened the right record. The two numbers are not interchangeable, and quoting the wrong one sends the check to the wrong filing.
